his site was created as a forum to research and ponder the history of a single branch of the Burgham (alternatively spelled Burgum) family.

It has information about a family living in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England during the 18th and 19th century. A family that makes a courageous attempt to navigate the maze of life during a historic time of change in the world - the time of the great industrial revolution.

This web-site contains photos, videos, census data, links to other webs, family trees, reports and much more.  I hope you find the information useful, insightful and entertaining.

The Forest of Dean is an area of about 204 square miles in the western part of Gloucestershire, south-central England.  It is bordered on the southeast by the River Severn and on the southwest by the River Wye and the border or Wales.

In the early 1800's this branch of Burghams lived in the Royal Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. They were a family of colliers (coal and iron ore miners) earning the privileges and rights of Freeminers.

Research of my ancestors leads to George Burgham, (b. [born]) in 1816 and his wife Elizabeth Williams (b. 1815).

Current dilemmas in the research of Burgham genealogy

(Can you help?)

August 2002

We are now looking for birth records of George Burgum--the father of George Burgum b. 1816--and the husband of Sarah Grindall. We know that George and Sarah were married on September 22, 1808 in Newland 2

May 2002

The International Genealogical Index at LDS shows George Burgum as the father of George Burgham b. 1816.
bullet

We received confirmation of this relationship via Parish Register Printouts of Little Dean, Gloucester, England; Christenings, 1813 - 1875 1

bullet

His wife was Sarah Grindall (sometimes spelled Grindal) b. 1789. We received confirmation via marriage record in the Parish register, 1741 - 1899 1

bullet

Sarah Grindall's father was Thomas Grindall and Mother was Hester, Bishop's transcripts, 1617-1812, Church of England, Parish Church of Little Dean 1
