This census makes it clear that Harry M. Burgham is George's stepson so this must have been a second marriage for Emily and since Harry's last name is Burgham, Emily first marriage must have been to another Burgham.  Could this be George's second marriage too?  If so, who was first wife and what are the names of the children if any?

Don,  It was great to get a response from you so quickly.  I forwarded your info to my sister in Florida and waited for her response.  We both believe you have found the correct William Williams for us!

  Fantastic!

When in Great Britain we obtained a copy of the marriage record of  James Williams and Caroline Watkins, who were married at Bream March 26, 1859. It was on a page 16, # 31.

The record directly below, # 32, is of Joshua Williams and Elizabeth Burgham.  He was 21, she 19,  He a bachelor, she a spinster.  He a collier. He residence is listed as Bream Woodside, as is hers.  His father is listed as William Williams and her father is George Burgham.  Their marriage record is dated May 17th, 1859.

I do believe we have a connection here!

Again, thanks so much!  We live about 15 minutes from the library of the Ohio

State Genealogical Society.  If there is anything we can look up for you, please ask!

Sincerely,

Keith Metcalf

Notes for Edwin John Burgham:

This is an excerpt from the  Winter 2000/2001 newsletter of the Burgum Family History Society prepared by Doug Burgum:

"To Donald Burgham, Naples, Florida....My records indicate that William Burgham married Minnie Burt in 1887 (Monmouth 11a/74).  Now there was a William Burgham born in 1868 at Whitecroft (near Pillowell).  This William would have been 21 years old in 1887 and could have married Minnie.  In 1881, this William was living at Pillowell with his parents Edwin and Clara Burgham.  They had another son John (b. 1860), and daughters Ann (b. 1871) and Martha (b. 1880).  Edwin's parents were George (b.1816) and Emily (b. 1826).  Could this be your family?"

Important note of correction to the above comment (12/25/2001):   Edwin (b. 8/28/1838) is the father of William (b. 1868), and the son of George (b. 1816) [see Edwin's birth certificate].  However,  Edwin's mother is not Emily.  His mother was Elizabeth Williams (b. 1815), the first wife of George (b. 1816) and who died after the 1871 census and before 1879 - when George gets re-married to Emily Kear Lee - who was also a widow (Thomas Lee is Emily's father).

October - December 1867 in Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, Dean, England, and died Abt. July 1909 in Moseley Green, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire,  England.

Notes for William Burgham:

William Burgham born in 1866.  According to the Marriage Certificate of William Burgham and Minnie Birt on 24th December 1887, at Coleford, William is described as a Widower aged 21 and Minnie as a Spinster aged 20.  William was a Collier.  His father is named as Edwin Burgham also a Collier.  Minnie's father is shown as Jonathan Birt also a Collier.  They were married in the Baptist Chapel in Coleford.  William worked as a Collier until the age of 47 when he developed coal miners disease and probably died of TB about 1920 at the age of 54.

From Will Beddis, commenting on the town of Oldcroft which was listed as the home of Minnie's Father in the 1851 census:

"Oldcroft (all one word) is just a very small hamlet between Yorkley and Viney Hill (about half a mile from each of these villages). It is where Uncle Tom and Aunt Laura were living immediately before emigrating to America with your father and the others; and where I remember, as a very small boy, all their household goods and chattels being laid out on the ground outside their cottage for sale before they went away. Oldcroft is about 2 miles or so from Moseley Green."

Notes for Minnie Birt:

Minnie Birt Burgham lived at Moseley Green.  She died at age 39 giving birth to her tenth child.  Margaret Beddis Yarworth remembers that her mother, Stella, telling her that Grandma Minnie was always singing hymns.  As the miners passed her home on their way to work in the pit they would stop and listen.  The day of her funeral, as the coffin carried shoulder high reached the Beech Tree Corner, Yorkley, people were still coming from the house.  That is how well she was thought of.  After, the family moved to live in Yorkley Wood except for Stella who lived with her Aunt Laura Pensome and Uncle Charles Pensome at Bailey Hill, Yorkley.  Minnie's daughters Gertrude (Gert) and Lizzie kept house for the rest of the family at Yorkley Wood.

According to the 1881 census:

Minnie Birt, daughter of Johnathan, living in West Dean, a scholar and age 13

Johnathan was the Head of the household and a Coal Miner, age 37

His Wife was Rosetta, age 36

Other Children:

   Jonathan, son, Scholar, age 9

   Thomas, son, Scholar, age 8

Frank Albert, Son, Scholar, age 4
