Harry Burt |
Harry Burt first put a
chocolate covered ice cream bar onto a stick in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1920.
Good Humor ice cream was born! Harry Burt introduced the famous
bell-ringing white neighborhood ice cream truck; and soon it, and the Good
Humor Man who drove it, became staples of American society. Hollywood even
made a movie called "The Good Humor Man". Although the neighborhood truck
has passed into history, Good Humor-Breyers has grown to be the world's
largest ice cream company, with regional plants throughout the United
States. Every year, Good Humor-Breyers introduces more new products than
any other ice cream company. |
| The Good Humor Company has been
pleasing kids throughout the U.S. for generations. It was founded by
entrepreneur Harry Burt, who owned a confectionery shop in Youngstown,
Ohio, which featured ice cream and candy. While developing a formula for
chocolate syrup to pour over ice cream, he came up with the idea of
offering it in blocks. His daughter found it hard to eat and when his son
suggested that the ice cream be frozen on sticks, ice cream bars were
born! Harry Burt named the new confection "Good Humor" because he had been
raised to believe that an individual's "good humor" was connected to one's
taste buds. Today Good Humor-Breyers has its headquarters in Green Bay,
Wisconsin, with plants and regional sales offices throughout the U.S.,
manufacturing hundreds of varieties of ice cream and frozen novelty
treats. |
